Gucci History |
|
It started from humble beginnings in 1920. Guccio Gucci opened a shop in Florence featuring his fine leather goods accessories for men and women. Soon after, he and his sons, Aldo, Ugo, Vasco and Rodolfo, spread the Gucci name to Rome and Milan. By 1953, even New York City had a Gucci store selling the world famous Gucci classics - handbags with a bamboo handle, moccasins with snaffle-bit detailing, trademark G belt clasps, and printed silk foulards and ties. By the late '60s additional stores had been opened in London, Palm Beach, Paris, Beverly Hills and Tokyo. Soon after, Rodolfo's son Mauritzio resurrected his grandfather's motto, "Stay small to remain great" and cut the Gucci line back from over 20,000 items to 5,000 and recaptured the prestigious brand's focus on high quality accessories. Fortunately, the Gucci collection of fine watches survived. Today, Gucci timepieces are modern interpretations of the original classic Gucci style. Each watch is an individual commitment to both Swiss precision and good taste. 1906The House of Gucci Was started in Florence in 1906 as small, family-owned leather saddlery shop. 1938Gucci expanded and a boutique was opened in Rome. 1947Gucci introduced the handle handbag, which is still a company mainstay. 1960Gucci opened stores also in Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Korea. 1995Gucci went public and had its first initial public offering on the AEX and NYSE for $22 per share. 1997Gucci acquired a watch licensee, Severin-Montres, and renamed it Gucci Timepieces. |
